THIRD PARTY INSPECTION (TPI)

NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING

Non-destructive testing (NDT) is a testing and analysis technique used by industry to evaluate the properties of a material, component, structure, or system for characteristic differences or welding defects and discontinuities without causing damage to the original part. NDT is also known as non-destructive examination (NDE), non-destructive inspection (NDI), and non-destructive evaluation (NDE).

WELDING

Construction of pipelines (onshore/ offshore), pressure vessels, piping, and structures involves a large amount of joining of metal pieces using a fusion welding process. The welding process like any other process is known to have weld imperfections as welds cannot be made totally free from imperfections/ defects. The different welding techniques have different characteristics, for instance, manual welding or sub-merged metal arc welding (SMAW) is known to contain volumetric imperfection in process of welding due to entrapped gas and slugs.

ROOT CAUSE ANALYSIS

In science and engineering, root cause analysis is a method of problem-solving used for identifying the root causes of faults or problems. It is widely used in IT operations, manufacturing, telecommunications, industrial process control, accident analysis, medicine, healthcare industry, etc.

COATING

A coating is a covering that is applied to the surface of an object, usually referred to as the substrate. The purpose of applying the coating may be decorative, functional, or both. Coatings may be applied as liquids, gases or solids e.g. Powder coatings.

FITNESS FOR SERVICE-(FFS)

Assessments are quantitative engineering evaluations that are performed to demonstrate the structural integrity of an in-service component that may contain a flaw or damage, or that may be operating under a specific condition that might cause a failure.

ENGINEERING CRITICAL ASSESSMENT (ECA)

Sometimes pipelines are designed to transport sour service fluid and combined with high stress/ strain during installation (see Figures below) and operation phase of the pipeline. The welded connection/ joints need to be inspected to check the integrity and control of the quality of the weld against an acceptance criterion. The acceptance criteria must be sound to ensure good quality weld which can be found to be fit for purpose of fit for service.

COMPOSITE MATERIALS AND POLYMERS

Polymer composites are polymer materials with a reinforcement, in which the polymer acts as a matrix resin that penetrates the reinforcement bundles and bonds to the reinforcement. Polymer composite materials are used mainly in automotive and aerospace applications, and this chapter focuses on automotive polymer composites, the most common of which is polyester polymer resin.

REPAIR AND EMERGENCY PIPELINE REPAIR SOLUTIONS

Pipeline repair is a plumbing maintenance service done to a piping system to restore its transportation capability and usefulness. It involves the use of wraps and the replacement of sections of the pipe with new ones, especially when the damage is permanent. It is done in industries to reduce unexpected production loss when product delivery goes below capacity.

ILI INSPECTION CONSULTANCY

Ultrasonic inline inspections (ILI) involve using ultrasound waves to assess the pipeline’s integrity. These sound waves, which are emitted by a transducer, propagate through pipeline material. We make sure that we put in enough research to make sure that the integrity of the pipelines is not messed up.

FAILURE ANALYSIS

Failure analysis is the process of collecting and analyzing data to determine the cause of a failure, often with the goal of determining corrective actions or liability.

Pipeline Damage Assessment (PDA)

Pipelines are generally the most economical way to transport large quantities of oil, refined oil products or natural gas as compared to other means such as rail transport and tanker service. The pipelines transport sometimes highly corrosive fluid and that leads to various types of corrosion damage such as metal loss and pitting corrosion and extent of corrosion sometimes exceed the design specified limits. In such situation damage assessments as per ASME B31G, DNVGL-RP-F101 can be done to document the remaining life of the pipeline with sustained damage or repair method can be suggested.

Finite Element Analysis (FEA)

Finite element analysis (FEA) is a computer simulation stress analysis approach which simulates the behaviour of a part or assembly under given boundary and loading conditions so that it can be assessed to check adequacy of design and integrity of part/ assembly. FEA is used by engineers to help simulate physical phenomena and thereby reduce the need for physical prototypes, while allowing for the optimisation of components as part of the design process of a project. FEA uses mathematical models to understand and quantify the effects of real-world conditions on a part or assembly. These simulations, which are conducted via specialised software, allow engineers to locate potential problems in a design, including areas of tension and weak spots.FEA can be used to simulate the mechanical, thermal, electrical, fluid dynamics, flow analysis and study the response of structural components/ members or assembly as a whole. FEA can used to analyse stress distribution, displacement distribution, strain distribution of variety of assets such as jacket structures, pipeline, pining, pressure vessel, Aeroplane etc. subjected to mechanical, thermal and loads together or individually.

FRONT END ENGINEERING DESIGN (FEED)

It is known that a large number of major oil and gas projects overruns with respect to their costs, schedules, and operational performance. Owner companies and contractors are struggling with the issues causing these failures. The Front End Engineering Design (FEED) has been identified as an important factor that plays a key role in determining the success of a project. However, the FEED and the associated Front End Loading (FEL) do not get the attention they deserve from the players in the business, namely, the owner companies, FEED, and EPC contractors. While academic studies on the FEL and its failures are available, how the seeds of failures are sown during an actual project FEED remains a mystery. The details are usually buried in the rubbished computers and hundreds of files that are shelved in companies' offices.
